Look at Total Commander 6.01, you can switch on tabbed interface if you like it (wich I have learned to do ) or just keep it "old school" and simple. It´s just as you want it to be.
Why not let the user decide wich interface to use?

I would love the possibility to use a switchable tabbed interface, whenever i find it convinient.
