Default Custom location for DATA files

If anybody has ever used Eudora, they'll know what I'm talking about. ALL of the data files (mailboxes, settings, etc) are stored in whatever folder you specify during application setup.

I would like to see something similar to this in FlashFXP. I think that the files necessary to be stored in a custom data folder would be:

-bookmarks.dat
-quick.dat
-FlashFXP.ini
-favorite.dat
-skiplist.dat
-Stats.dat
-sites.dat

I think this is handy for a few reasons:

-For those who like to boot between multiple OS's, they can use the same settings files for FlashFXP on different partitions, if they specify that FlashFXP place it's settings files in a logical partition.
-Easier to import/export settings to and from different FlashFXP versions
-Easier to make manual backups of data files

You can specify a new data location in the windows shortcut by changing the startup folder. Provided you didn't select the "Per-user settings" during install, if you did see the text below.

You will need to place the flashfxp.ini into the data folder before FlashFXP will accept this new location.

Using this shortcut method is not an ideal solution, I had intended to add a specific registry setting, perhaps I'll add this into the next beta. It's been on the to-do list for over a year now.

Disabling per-user settings
During installtion you selected to use seperate settings for each user account "Application Data Folder" because of this there is no way to override the location of the data files are stored.

To allow storing the data files anywhere you're going to need to undo this setting, however you wont be able to keep settings per-user.

You need to set the follow registry key to disable this option.

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\FlashFXP]
"APPDATA"=dword:00000000

Thanks Bigstar -- I know this is an old post, but for some reason, I never checked.

np

If it's of any interest of you now there's a couple other ways to do this as well. Sadly I'm not entirely sure which build these were added in.

The registry key
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\FlashFXP]
"DATAPATH"="C:\PATH\TO\DATA\FILES\"

Via the command line
FlashFXP.exe -path="C:\PATH\TO\DATA\FILES\"

Well, if you ask me, this is probably the best way to handle it (by modifying the shortcut) -- It leaves the registry clean. One of the reasons I use FlashFXP is because it's built very modular and portable.

The cleaner the registry, the more of a happy camper I am
