Red face PORT / PASV strange matter

Dear all,

We hare facing a very annoying trouble since several monthes.

We have more than 10 folders in IIS Root. Only on one of them, we have this strange problem :
> PORT downloads fail.
> PASV uploads fail.

We are obliged to, each time, change the type of connection between upload and download actions.

I've stopped searching the cause because we planned a server migration. But after having changed the machine, upgraded from IIS 6 to IIS 8, the problem remains, on the same and only folder !!!

Do you have any idea for the origin of this problem ?

Many thankds

FXP Version : 4.4.0 (build 1991), but same problem with older releases. Registered Version.
Win Server 2012 AND 2003, IIS 8 AND 6 respectively.
Client machines in W7.

When I try to upload in PASV mode, it seems that the upload stops after exactly 1.400 bytes.

I don't if it could help.

Is this a problem that happens on any ftp client or only specifically FlashFXP?

It is not a FlashFXP problem (its not a problem) some FTP servers are configured in active (PORT) mode because its more secure.

This mean that you need to set ACTIVE mode per site for this to work properly.
The servers you are trying to connect DO NOT accept passive connections (need reconfigurations) passive mode is also less secure.
  1. Make sure your site is in site manager, if it is not put it in.
  2. Select site in site manager
  3. See example setting site to PORT screenshot.

Done and "problem" should be gone.

For future reference, FlashFXP has two passvive mode/Active mode settings, one setting is global (which affects all sites) the other setting is per site.
Per Site settings override global settings and allow extra configuration, for special cases such as this.

Global settings are accessed via F6
Per site settings are accessed via F4 > select site > change settings> click apply

enjoy.

You missed the point here, what i was asking to the reporter was if this situation only happen with client FlashFXP when connecting to the server or if it happens also with other clients. Ex: Filezzila

Exactly because what you've written, the "problem" will happen with any client if the case, what means it's the server config.

I understood, however intention was to provide a reply/information why this happens and also provided information on how to correct the configuration.

For future reference.
By default FlashFXP is configured (globally) for passive connections as below screenshot. It may be required to add a port range and IP for active mode transfers, depending on Server Configuration.

This may not work as desired with FTP servers which are only accepting connections in active mode (PORT) this is also why I provided info on how to change per-site so as not to affect all other existing sites. Global Settings should be handled with care.

@hggomes

Some clients may indeed handle this automatically and thus it may be transparent to users, so it may help or not to test another client.
Filezilla for by default e.g. allows automatically fallback to other transfer mode on failure, and that in some peoples minds, is immediately a BUG with FlashFXP, when really its not.

Perhaps FlashFXP could handle this in a more transparent manner. but Ill leave that for a feature request if anyone wants to make one.

@iguypouf
Please upgrade to latest build of flashfxp 4.4.0 build 1995 http://www.flashfxp.com/download

If any of the above has no effect, you may want to look at server configuration, Ive read somewhere you need to add some ports to the server config, but I have no experience with IIS. please see http://technet.microsoft.com/en-GB/library/hh831655 steps
Maybe thers some information there which could help double check configurations.

If your sure its not server configuration perhaps more information is required by bigstar. Ill poke him.

It may be helpful to know what your configuration is for this site and any global settings, in that case bigstar may ask for your flashfxp.ini by private msg only or direct email... do not post your flashfxp.ini on forums.

Your flashfxp logs are not time stamped. please make your logs timestamped it will help determine server response times delays etc.

Also server side logs may have other clews why this is failing....

Could the error be related to this? http://support.microsoft.com/kb/961293

If not perhaps its a very similar issue.

Hello all,

Thanks for your help BUT :

If my server was configured to disallow active / passive connections, I could'nt be able to transfer some files, and not some others.

I remember you that two files on the same folder on the same disk, one is transfered, one not...

I've just made the update and the problem still happens.

@Bigstar : of course, this is not a FlashFXP problem, I've the same with FileZilla, but I don't know where I can find FTP experts to find my problem...

@X3 : do you need the same logs timestamped ?

Thanks for you help.
