View Full Version : FlashFXP crashing/hanging

Hello

I've been a FlashFXP user for some years. Since yesterday I have had FlashFXP randomly crash. The program stops responding and it needs to be End Tasked. This occurs at a random time while uploading or downloading.

I have tried reinstalling v3.0.2 and an older v2.1 with the same problems.

The log files don't show anything they just show the transfer starting.

I have removed all firewalls and antivirus software temporarily to test.

I appreciate that the problem looks like it may be outside of FlashFXP but does anyone have any suggestions?

FlashFXP v3.0.2 Build 1045 Registered
WinXP Pro SP2
No NAT, but behind router (although I've tried sites either site of the router)
Firewall is off, there is a site firewall, but internal transfers fail to.
Antivirus McAfee TVD8i, but I have tried with this uninstalled also.
Network 100mbit connection

FTP Server, various, internally we use BulletProof FTPd v2.x

at what point does it hang?
do you have any error logs in your flashfxp dir?

porsche

The last few lines of the log don't show any errors:

[L] Opening data connection IP: xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx PORT: 21
[L] RETR b0105.img
[L] 150 Opening BINARY mode data connection for b0105.img (386447450 bytes).

It hangs either while RETR or STOR, just part way through, it just hangs. Sometimes it'll hang after 2 secs, other times after minutes.

thanks

Is this a ftp transfer or a fxp transfer?

I suspect the hanging might be caused by the ftp server being unable to establish a data connection.

Does any part of the file actually get transferred?
What happens if you wait awhile, say 5 min or longer?

porsche

Yes the file transfers, sometimes it will transfer several files before crashing.

If I wait (left it overnight last night) it just sits there like a non-responding window.

Very odd...

Hi,
I'm having a similar problem that is possibly related

I am using 3.0.2 build 1045

I have noticed the crash/hang problem and kept killing the process via windows task manager. I then left the wtm open and restarted my upload. I then noticed the cpu usage and mem usage creeping up. When the cpu got to 99% it appeared that the app hand indeed hung although data was still being uploaded. I left it and the file(s) completed.

Another thing I noticed was that the cpu and mem usage dropped back again when the next file started.

Have you noticed this with your problem? Could it be some sort of caching prob?

Hello

Just checked and CPU usage does increase during the transfer, but it froze on 14% (it was getting to about 18% towards the end of some files).

I am having the exact same problem as this. Same build # but now when I uninstall and try an earlier build the problem is the same.
Usually when uploading, the file gets to about 7% then Flash FXP hangs. CPU usage is 100% and I get the usual 'white title bars' and cant toggle between programs.
The file is still being uploaded but to me it looks like the program has crashed.
Usually have to end program using the task manager and a few times in that I have seen FlashFXP listed twice.

I have some more info on the problem I'm having...
Firstly I've installed FlashFXP on a different PC and copied all of my settings across and it's been working fine.

I've noticed that the crashes happen when I do 'something' on my PC, this could be dragging the FlashFXP window, opening an explorer window, etc. A watched app never crashes.

As this was too odd to believe I reinstalled Windows, and am having exactly the same problem.

More to follow...

I've got this problem too.

Using Version 3.0.2 build 1045 but had the same prob with version 2.1 also.

I use FlashFXP to access my Xbox to transfer files. I have been doing this happily for about a year until yesterday when I got the same problem as you guys, it transfers a few files then cpu usage hits 100% and it looks like its hung and all you can do is end task it!
So I upraded to 3.0.2, 1045 but the same thing happens. What I want to know is why all of a sudden is this happening when nothing has chaged?

Is everyone having this problem using SP2?

Just a thought since Microsoft bloatware  decided to limit the number of open connections.

I am running SP2, but I was running SP2 for a long while before I had problems. I'm also running SP2 on PCs that are not having the problem...

of course that doesn't mean it isn't SP2 :)

very different things.
it doesn't affect ftp unless you have more than 50 sites contantly connecting/reconnecting.

After much swapping of hardware and testing, I found that it was a problem with my CPU (P4 3.2Ghz).

Now using the same setup as before, but with a different CPU everything is fine.

Please note that I had a slightly different problem to those with the creeping CPU load.

Well mine started also behaving like that. Just stuck not moving anything in the queue. I have tried it on 2 diff comps. and still the same issue. I have to press disconnect twice (at both ends) and press go before it resumes the ftp or fxp.
I'm running on XP Pro, SP1 upgraded a long time ago to v. 3.0.2 build 1045. Processor is no problem used cpu 2-4 %
Config of computer
Barton 2800+
1 GB RAM
Kaspersky SW FW

I don't know why this seems to occur never happened before.
This just happened and I haven't changed anything while this started to happen.

Can all you that are having problems tell if you are all running Windows XP and if you have done the SP2 update

I just got a new computer and decided to try the trial version of this after hearing it was the best around

I too am having the freezing problem and was told it has to do with the SP2 being on my comp and possibly the firewall that comes with it

I almost bought this prog just from the reviews it got - but decided to try it first and now after finding it getting stuck and needing to be shutdown - I may wait until I see it has been fixed

If any of the makers or techs for FlashfFXP are reading this - when this problem gets fixed - please e-mail me & I will buy this product right away

well after being told by someone that I needed to buy this product in order to make it work properly - I did

Problem is - the paid for version works no better than the demo version

As soon as I opened it and started a download - it froze up

I need to know what is going on with this product?????

FlashFXP's trial version works properly. It seems that you have a problem with your O.S, your network or your hardware, so ... please, download FlashFXP again from the official (http://www.flashfxp.com/download.php) site and paste here the complete error message and/or the log.

See this (http://forum.flashfxp.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=4745) post. We can help you if you give us proper information ... 'Flashfxp stucks and needs a shutdown' isn't enough.

There is nothing to give an error report on - nothing comes up in the logs or even on the servers themselves -
most times it just freezes and does nothing - other times it comes right back on as if nothing was wrong
If there is some other type of log available thru FlashFXP - let me know and I will copy/paste it here

For some reason I believe this to be a XP SP2 problem

I bought and used TurboFTP for the longest time - got used to its problems because I had tried all the other as demos (except yours) and they really were crap

My comp has been acting up so I got a new 1
Was always told about the horror stories about SP2 but also heard if done with a clean new format - no problems

Did the clean install and decided to find out if your product was any good after hearing about it - tried the demo - right from the beginning it would lockup
So I went back to Turboftp
I started having the same thing happen to it - it locked up

After doing some reading - found alot of people who bragged about FlashFXP and even found this support forum

When more than a few people suggested that the retail may work better than the demo - I went ahead and bought your product

Now I have 2 paid for apps and I am getting no where with their support either

I have tried lots of things from turning off my firewall as well as the firewall from SP2 to trying different servers - all the same -
something in my configuration is stopping or limiting my use of this product

If there is any way to get this figured out - I would love it

MxxCon

so are you saying your TurboFTP also locks up?

what are you doing in flasfxp when that happen?
enable disk-based logs and post status log of when that happen

just did a test with a friend who has a server --

I also connected to 2 other servers and sent the same 100mb file to all 3

2 of them were getting the file at 20-22kbs and the third was at 10kbs

Within minutes - the first connection locked up & my friend said it just showed on his server that I was idle - but my device manager said flashfxp was "Not Responding"

When I tried to click on the flashfxp window (that was locked) - it would not open - it has in the past - only to reveal a solid white page from top to bottom

The other 2 continued to run the 2nd that was running at 20kbs jumped to 30-35kbs and the 3rd stayed at 10kbs but both continued to run

But earlier today I tried on my own and had first 1 freeze up and then a 2nd froze up too - making bith show up in device manager as "not responding"

As I write this the 1st is still frozen - after almost 15 minutes - but the other 2 are still going

I know that most servers have a timed disconnection but when frozen - this does not seem to time them out

I can't provide any kind of logs from either the server or flashfxp (if I knew where they were) - the flashfxp winndow either comes back on or it stays locked and has to be closed down from device manager - leaving no trace of what was going on -
except the file that was being uploaded - its still there - so it was working but not for long

Hope some of this helps

mhdrw_00
02-11-2005, 08:03 PM
restarted the 1 that locked (since my friend was watching on his server) and restarted the other 2 after -

enable disk-based logs and post status log of when that happen

now where do I find the logs???

as far as the turboftp locking up too - it did some weird things too and after checking the device manager once - it did also appear as - "not responding" but I have had some of the strangest things happen with Turboftp - I just didn't think about it being the same thing -
but yes - it too was freezing up as well

If it would help you - I am on msn right now and I sent you my addy in a PM - I can leave the 3 running too

have you tried uninstalling Sygate?
in many cases disabling such software isn't enough becuse often it's still running in the background..
plus it appears that you are not running the latest version of sygate..you might want to consider upgrading it and see if this problem still exist

mhdrw_00
02-12-2005, 08:17 AM
nope - problem has nothing to do with sygate firewall -
I tried that already - by both uninstalling the firewall and even going back to an older version

With my recent format - I have very few things installed on this comp and it still locks up

I recently tried a demo copy of CuteFTP and it runs just fine with all the same servers that used to make FlashFXP crash - was thinking maybe it was the faster speeds some of them were going - but CuteFTP handled the fastest ones without a hitch

As far as TurboFTP goes - it seems to me that when it locked up - it was being run at the same time as FlashFXP and when FlashFXP locked - it also locked up TurboFTP

Sometimes when FlashFXP lockes - it also locks everything from IE windows to other applications - needing to be shutdown by device manager before I could do anything

I have tried both the beta available of your site (3.1.10) to another someone had that I don't see available anywhere (3.1.7build1060) - as well as 2 older versions that friends had including an older 2.1 version) -
each time I installed & tried these versions - they all locked and when I uninstalled them - I also cleaned out everything including the registry (in case that was causing the problem)

mhdrw_00
02-12-2005, 12:31 PM
I am running out of things to check - I have just about emptied my comp of things that could be causing this

I am now truly believing that this problem is a compatibility issue with SP2 update of Windows XP

Even though friends of mine cannot duplicate the crashing on their computers which also run WinXP SP2 - those others posting here - do have this happening to them

mhdrw_00
02-12-2005, 07:23 PM
24 hours with no response from support
Sent a few PM to them and got no response

I have spent the last 24 hours working on finding a solution for this problem -
have read page after page after page -
from lots of people using lots of programs for ftp - all having the same problems

I t would be nice to be told something - even if it was -
"We don't know"

COME ON guys - how about some help!!!!!!!!!!!

your log that shows lockup is an ssl trasnfer.
do you have problems with regular transfers too?
wild shot here, but go to http://www.memtest.org/ download test floppy and run it on your puter to make sure your memory is working properly

mhdrw_00
02-12-2005, 08:49 PM
this computer is brand new with 1gb of new memory tested at the shop where it was built

The log shows you 3 connections - 1 ssl and 2 normal tranfers

it doesn't matter what type of transfer it is - or how many -
all connections crash at some point
(I chose to connect to 3 to show how they crash)

You will also notice on my log - that when it does crash - nothing appears when it comes back on or when it freezes completely
The 1 that did freeze as it was being closed only show half of the log out screen

- it seems the faster the connection - the faster the crash

sometimes it doesn't even take 3 seconds after connection for it to freeze -
some times it comes back on -
but then goes back out again and agin until - it doesn't come back at all
some times it goes right to a crash and it never comes back

& even some times - it doesn't crash at all

I was very surprised to see the other 2 lasted as long as they did - normally when 1 crashes - soon after the other(s) do too

I firmly believe this is a SP2 firewall problem

mhdrw_00
02-12-2005, 09:46 PM
the funny thing is - I can FXP with no problems at all

MxxCon
02-12-2005, 09:55 PM
ok, those 2 links you PMed are talking about SP2 and general ftp programs...they are not specific to FlashFXP

have you tried disabling SP2's firewall? do you still have the problem?
did you configure SP2's firewall to forward needed ports?

mhdrw_00
02-12-2005, 10:02 PM
what ports would I need to be configuring????
all the different ports that the servers run on???
I did add the ftp header as well as the FlashFXP header and added port 21 - no good

I have tried everything I have read - like 10 different things
none work

from closing the firewall - to adding the ftp - to adding flashfxp - to ticking this and ticking that --
all of them - none have worked

Yes none of them - I don't think mention FlashFXP but all are talking about ftp's that won't work with SP2

Microsoft has 4 pages worth of things concerning things that won't work with SP2 as well as a few more pages concerning the SP2 firewall

2 of my friend run basically the same setup as me - both have SP2 installed - 1 was even 1 of the servers from the logs that saw me on his server - just idling
they both downloaded the trial and it works fine for them

Is there anyway this may have to do with the fact that I have a cable connection & they don't????

mhdrw_00
02-13-2005, 12:39 PM
more information to report --

I can fxp using this product without any problems

I can upload files too - does not seem to crash when I just upload

My problem now just comes down to files from other servers not coming thru to my computer -

Another thing that I have noticed is -
it seems the faster the speed - the faster the freeze
When the server I download from gives me good speeds - it crash very quickly - while slower speed servers take a little longer until they crash

As I started the thread, I feel I should chip in again...
I deduced the problem to be with my CPU (3.2Ghz P4). I changed this for a 3.0Ghz P4 and the problem dissapeared. I was sent a replacement 3.2Ghz P4 (sealed brand new) and I have the problem again. However if I start a transfer and leave the PC and never do anything with it, it doesn't crash. If I start the transfer and move the window around, open a web browser, basically anything then it will crash.

Worth noting is that it is still transfering for me in this crashed state although much slower. To our internal FTP servers i get 8Mb/sec or so, after the crash it slows to around 30bytes/sec.

I will be getting some more CPUs next week of varying speeds, I'll post the results.

-Porsche-

mhdrw_00
02-13-2005, 02:10 PM
I was thinking this might have an effect on the download - but I too have a 3.0Ghz P4 & I open the task manager first -
then I open FlashFXP and load up a download -
as soon as I hit transfer - especially a fast server - it locks up -
with me doing nothing -
yes there are processes going in the background - but like I said - I have the bare minimum running - no antivirus - no other process hogs -

So I am doing nothing that causes the download to crash

You are getting free support. Expect some delay while we work on yours and many others questions/problems. FlashFXP's policies are very clear, and NOONE on our staff said you had to purchase FlashFXP to get problems/bugs fixed. The shareware version functions exactly the same. You have given us nothing really to work on. We can't reproduce your problem, and we are still actively trying to figure out what could be the issue. There are so many variables involved with windows and different hardware. Have a little patience.

I have been following this thread since the beginning, but I have not seen anything that might explain or cause this problem.

Due to the nature of this problem it's really difficult to pin-point one specific thing and focus on it.

If you can upload and fxp I don't think windows firewall or SP2 is conflicting with FlashFXP. Although at this point in time anything is possible.

The only option left that I can think of is maybe some sort of remote desktop sharing so that I can monitor and see extactly what happens go from there.

btw have you both tried the beta release of FlashFXP v3.1.10.1067?
http://www.flashfxp.com/download-beta.php

While this is a beta release performance and stablity appears is excellent.

mhdrw_00
02-15-2005, 09:05 PM
I understand what you guys are saying - I have offered from the beginning to get on MSN Messenger to talk with & work with whoever

I have tried the 2 betas - 3.0.2.builds - 1044 & 1060

UMM - while copying the versions of betas that I have - I notice the version of beta you wrote - v2.1.10.1067
is Version 2.1 -- is that correct????

I tried to write everything that happens and everything I can think of -

did anyone read about the possible problem with
[multi] - incorrect word - Sorry

Hyper-thread technology??
As soon as I find out how to disable it - I will try it and see

In all of my tests - it seems that the speed of the server being downloaded from might be the best indicator of what goes wrong - the fast the server -- the faster the crash
slower servers sometimes never crash (notice I say sometimes - as I have had crashes on servers delivering files at 2okbs)

bigstar
02-15-2005, 09:17 PM
Sorry that was a mistake, it should of been 3.1.10.1067

I would highly recommend you try the latest beta mentioned above and please let us know if you continue to have problems.

did anyone read about the possible problem with multi-thread technology?? I'm not familiar with this could you please explain.

One last thought, you might try running a scan disk to make sure your hard drive is in good shape or defrag your drive if it's been awhile. Downloading a file to a bad sector or a fraggmented drive can cause FlashFXP to lock up or behave unexpectedly.

mhdrw_00

Bigstar - Did you read my posts above??

My computer is brand new

Yes I did.. you mentioned "3.0.2.builds - 1044 & 1060", I just want to make sure you also tried 1067. Since I didn't see 1067 mentioned anywhere.

I don't think hyperthreading has much to do about this problem, All of my computer systems use hyperthreading and none of them have this problem.

You might run some performance/stablity type of applications on your computer and see how they do. You may have a faulty component in your compuer and FlashFXP is effected by it. I'd still recommend running scan disk on your drive even though it is a new system.

Send me your MSN ID in a private message and we'll do desktop sharing and you can show me what happens.

the other night when I was trying the speed limit part for you -
it didn't seem to matter - it kept crashing

the download crashed totally in the end but before it did - I did keep seeing the flash of the error report when it did freeze for a few seconds

Looking at the error report - it seems some info kept changing on it -
so when it did flash - I copied the error report and then when it flashed again - I repeated the copy of report to another folder

I uploaded the folders to your server in hopes that something reveals the cause

some of the reports have some different information on them but I have no idea what I am looking at

I am going to try the disabling of hyper thread this weekend - will let you know

After doing some investigating online in other forums, one reason for my odd Flash FXP behaviour MAY be ZoneAlarm Security Suite.
Apparently this can cause some of these ftp issues even when it is not running. I have yet to remove the software yet but many people have claimed that removal sets Flash FXP and other ftp programs back to normal operation.

"After doing some investigating online in other forums, one reason for my odd Flash FXP behaviour MAY be ZoneAlarm Security Suite."

Yes this does seem to be the case. But from my reading it's all ZoneAlarm users who are seeing this. ZoneLabs is supposedly in contact with one of the FlashFXP developers - actually I think it may have been one of the forum mods here they are in contact with. Just went and re-read my email.

I can say my experience has been this. I'm running the latest version of ZASS ( clean install ). I've tried the last 2 FlashFXP betas - which I thought stated they included a fix for the hang issue. Neither version of either product are playing nice together at this time. Every time I try to upload anything. The upload hangs at around the 9 or 10% mark.

Instead of repeating my thoughts on all this. I'll just link my blog post on the subject http://iggy.gnomeblog.com/blog/_archives/2005/3/1/388783.html

That post includes a link back to this thread.

I contacted ZA a few times over a couple months but they never got back to me.

I downloaded a copy of ZA trial and performed some of my own tests, Surprising I was unable to reproduce any of the problems I've seen people report. I had ZA installed for about a week. In that time I encountered two random reboots, I suspected ZA caused the reboots because up until then I never had this problem. Since removing ZA from my system I have not had a random reboot.

I suspect the problem is with ZA and the people at ZA will need to solve it on there end. They can download FlashFXP from our website to perform the testing.

Since I was not able to reproduce the problem, it's very possible that they aren't able to reproduce it either.

In another thread someone suggested "Winsock XP Fix 1.2" and that has appeared to resolve their problems, I don't know if this is the answer for everyone but you might want to try it. I found the following site where it can be downloaded http://www.softpedia.com/get/System/OS-Enhancements/WinSock-XP-Fix.shtml

My opinion is I shouldn't have to add or tweak anything on my machine to get the software to work properly. I saw the "fix" in the previous thread. Thank you for adding it here. I've been in contact with Corey at ZoneLabs ( no longer an employee as of yesterday ). But I know he has passed my comments on to Marcus who normally is good about tracking things down. I'm only seeing an issue when uploading. Downloading is fine. This has been a consitent issue since the last gold build of FlashFXP. I can in fact upload using IE. I did this yesterday with about 100MB of pictures to my blog. The FlashFXP IE plugin is install on this machine. It is when using the actual FlashFXP program / interface that I'm seeing the upload sticking. So I've found a work around. Not one I prefer to be honest.

As for random reboots with ZoneAlarm. I've seen no other reports of this. And I've definitely not seen this behavior. Currently or in the past. My guess would be this was do to with a bad install. Or a previous firewall product left some residue. For anyone who might run into this. This thread http://forum.zonelabs.org/zonelabs/board/message?board.id=inst&message.id=30183#M30183 would probably be the best way to resolve the issue.

With the tone this thread seems to have taken. I guess I'll be having to give up my paid copy of FlashFXP and find a new product to use. It seems obvious that this isn't user error or some fluke. To many users are reporting seeing this for it to be that.

In a previous thread. A user suggested turning off the ZoneAlarm privacy features when using FlashFXP. I've seen no positive results in doing this.

Sometimes software companies are as bad as telcos and cable companies. Everyone wants to pass the buck instead of go the extra mile.

"Also disable the antivirus."

And I saw this suggestion in another thread. That is honestly not real wise or safe advice in this day and age. FTP software should be able to run smoothly without having to disable your chosen security product. And honestly this product use to do just that. Run smoothly with my chosen security software. It's seems rather obvious something has changed in one or both to cause an issue now.

I totally agree, You shouldn't have to fix anything, but this day an age with so many different software programs on the market there are bound to be conflicts and issues. Not every program is perfect. We try to make every users experience a great experience, I'll be happy to work with you in any way I can to help resolve this problem. I would love to see these long standing issues with ZA resolved.

I have to ask though, Did you try the winsock fix? If you didn't can you please try it and see if it makes any difference. You may have to reboot after applying the fix, I'm not entirely sure.

The FlashFXP IE plugin is only for downloading, It installs a BHO which detects when you click on a ftp:// url in IE.

The winsock fix will not fix anything directly related to FlashFXP, Since FlashFXP doesn't install any low level winsock helpers. However ZA does, I believe even windows firewall does and maybe switching from windows firewall to ZA causes this problem one some systems.

Take a look at this page I found via google
http://www.testmy.net/topic-2821.msg27437;topicseen

The last post states that after running the winsock xp fix the user was able to upload.

If this does fix your problem perhaps ZA should have a built in method that performs the exact same fix if needed. That way ZA users wont have to deal with this problem.

I totally agree that anti-virus or firewall software should never be permanently disabled, disabling it temporally to determine if there is a conflict may be needed from time to time. Some applications actually ask you to disable anti-virus software during installation, I don't agree with this but in some cases it's a necessary evil.
