When I try to check for updates I get an "Update Failed" message with the following details:
Error: Forbidden
I am using Version 2.1 (build 924)
Is there a fix for this?

Your using a program/proxy that changes the user-agent of the FlashFXP Live Update client, If the user-agent is modified you are rejected with forbidden access.

In Options/Preferences/Proxy/Firewall/Ident I have the Proxy Server Type set as 0. None so I don't understand why this should happen!

This is an external program, like a firewall or privacy blocking program installed on your computer.

I use Sygate firewall and its set to allow, I am behind a Router but don't think that it could be the problem

According to the SyGate website, SyGate has an Identity blocking option that will block the user-agent, you need to deactivate this.
From the SyGate website.
Identity blocking: (preventing dissemination of user system info such as browser, OS, etc.): Sygate Security Agent incorporates OS fingerprint masquerading and Stealth mode browsing features, which protect systems from OS fingerprinting methods, and block any attempts to obtain browser version and history.
Alternatively you can manually check for newer versions by browsing to our download page at http://www.flashfxp.com/download.php
