Some of these suggestions are already made available on many servers, glFtpd for one. Makes me wonder what type of servers and OS you're used to connecting to. :)

Well, generally, Windows-based servers are short on such info, which led me to think you're maybe mostly used to such servers.

is there a thing on unix that allows such a thing?

yes, unix has several ways to do this. Like I said, glFtpd servers can easily be configured to show much, if not all of the info you seek, such as in the status-line when you do a cwd, the status-message shown on login/logout etc. unix-based servers are easy to configure.

there's no easy and strait way of telling that.
usualy site will tell such info in it's welcome message.
also you can get some info using SITE commands.
type of OS or rather type of ftp server can be determined by SYST command.
