What is fxp?

I have been using FTP for quite sometime now and people keep talking about terms such as "flashing" and "fxp"? Is flashing another way of saying connecting? Does FXP stand for File eXchange Protocol? People talk about FXP message boards and stuff so I am a bit hazy on these new terms and cannot easily find their meaning maybe I am missing something hehe.
