View Full Version : Browsing while transferring

One thing that really bugs me about FlashFXP is that you cannot browse into other directories while transferring files. It would be a real plus if you could add same-time browse and transfer support.

in order to do that, flashfxp will have to be made multi-threaded. and this isn't planned for now.
if you want to browse at the same time as you are transfering, just open another instance of flashfxp.

yea, but what if the server does not support 2 logins per ip?

if that's the case then the only thing you'll be able to browse is only dirs that are in your cache.

thats true, but you could use that to your advantage
use the search for files option, and enter *.*
theoretically, because it accessed every folder you have priveleges to, they would all be in your cache, and you would be able to browse them

Which brings me to the next question:
How hard is it to implement browsing the cache while transferring?
I got a weird feeling it isn't that easy as it sounds....

Offline/In-Transfer browsing is already slated on the To-Do list, and has been something I've been pushing Charles to add for many years now. We've already got a LIST cache going, but some pretty major changes have to be made in order to browse it Offline or while in a Transfer.
Whether multi-threading will be necessary to allow In-Transfer browsing, I'm not sure. I would imagine it wouldn't, but if you are transfering many very small files you will probably notice many annoying pauses interrupting your browsing.
One of the main technical hurtles is that FlashFXP is an object oriented program. It presently needs to see the files in the remote listview in order to queue/transfer them. Changes would have to be made to have FlashFXP lose its dependancy on objects and reference arrays or hash tables from memory.
This is what I think I know about FlashFXP, I could be wrong.

Then you wouldn't be able to connect to that site anyway - if i'm correct other programs that allow browsing when transfering are establishing more than one connection (ex. BitBeamer, CuteFTPPro - at least, when talking about Cute, i observed this about year or more (definitely more :) ) ago). I could be wrong tho'
