Is it possible to search a remote FTP server?

I am thinking that it would be tremendouly helpful if I could search a remote FTP server for the programs I have before deciding what to upload. This ensures that there is no waste of HD space as a result of duplicated uploads.

Is the above possible? Anyone has ideas? Thanks.
