Well, you normally don't start a pathname with a space - i've never seen it anyway. And, in this case, you usually start with "/" - having a space there does not make sense. imho, it should be something done automatically, but *may* have an option to turn it off. I don't see the point to adding the option, though. For instance;

/usr/local/home/mystuff
- to have a space in front of this does not make sence. And just pasting "mystuff" or "usr" (without the slash in front) will most likely give you an error.
