If your using a Firewall with a privacy filter. Most software firewalls offer this now. The privacy filter will prevent FlashFXP from sending important information to the webserver that is used for validation and as a result the update check fails.
Also the update check uses a http connection, if your firewall isn't configured properly it may be blocking the connection attempt.
