I can confirm that I am seeing similar.

What I have found is that if you run the auto updater, cancel it and then run it again it will work that second time and all consecutive times after that. It seems like the first time that you run the updater it always fails.

What I am also seeing is that the updater now takes you to the website to verify whether or not you have the latest version installed. It no longer does it internally.
