problem in connecting through proxy/firewall! HELP!

Ok I have just moved into halls/dorms, i am connected to a network to access the internet, i am sure i am behind a proxy server or some sort of firewall.. i cannot connnect to any ftp sites, but my univeristy one! so i am guessing they have blocked me or some how not letting me bypass through to other sites... i just need some information on how to go about getting around this:

you need to contact IT department or whoever is responsible for providing internet connection in your dorm and get info how to configure ftp clients.

how possibly can we(people outside) know how your school's network is configured?

Try talking to some compsci or compeng students. I'm sure somebody at your school has figured out a way thru the proxy.
